FROM BECKER, WITH LOVE: MAY IS FOR MOVEMENT

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m constantly inspired by not only the shapes of waves and clouds, but also their movement. There’s something about how they constantly change—how they can be rough and unrelenting in one moment, but then soft and peaceful in another—that appeals to me as a hairdresser.

In my work, I often think about waves and clouds, and how they move in nature. Hair should feel natural when you cut it; it should never look stiff, flat or heavy. When I cut—and even when I color—I think of every single strand and how it falls. Hair should feel light and buoyant; it should move organically with you. With every step you take your hair should naturally bounce and float.

That’s why I developed my #twistandtexture technique.

When I combine this with artful layering, I’m able to cut away density from thick hair that lacks movement or add in volume to fine hair that typically lays flat and lifeless. No matter if you have a little hair or a lot, you’re going to have loads of movement when you leave my chair!
